Tiny High-Frequency Cryocooler Is Cold And Efficient

Washington DC (SPX) Feb 21, 2007 - A new cryogenic refrigerator has been demonstrated at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) that operates at twice the usual frequency, achieving a long-sought combination of small size, rapid cooling, low temperatures and high efficiency. The cryocooler could be used to chill instruments for space and military applications, and is a significant step toward even smaller, higher-frequency versions for integrated circuits and microelectromechanical (MEM) systems.

Scientists Convert Heat To Power Using Organic Molecules

Berkeley CA (SPX) Feb 20, 2007 - Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, have successfully generated electricity from heat by trapping organic molecules between metal nanoparticles, an achievement that could pave the way toward the development of a new source for energy. The discovery, described in a study published today (Thursday, Feb. 15) in Science Express, an electronic publication of the journal Science, is a milestone in the quest for efficient ways to directly convert heat into electricity.

A New Russian Energy Monopoly For Better Or For Worse

Moscow (RIA Novosti) Feb 16, 2007 - What should we make of the recently announced decision by Gazprom and Siberian Coal Energy Company (SUEK) to set up a new power generation champion? The authorities have both endorsed the transaction and hurried to forecast a bright outlook for it on the Russian energy market. The reaction of the business community, however, was more equivocal. On the one hand, this seems to be a logical final stage in the consolidation of the industry.

Sandia Helps Develop New Wind Turbine Blade Design

Albuquerque, NM (SPX) Feb 16, 2007 - A new wind turbine blade design that researchers at Sandia National Laboratories developed in partnership with Knight and Carver (K and C) of San Diego promises to be more efficient than current designs. It should significantly reduce the cost-of-energy (COE) of wind turbines at low-wind-speed sites. Named STAR for Sweep Twist Adaptive Rotor, the blade is the first of its kind produced at a utility-grade size.

Reactor Upgrades Help Researchers Study Nuclear Fusion As Energy Source

Boston MA (SPX) Feb 15, 2007 - For about six months of the year, bursts of a hot, electrically charged gas, or plasma, swirl around a donut-shaped tube in a special MIT reactor, helping scientists learn more about a potential future energy source: nuclear fusion. During downtimes when the reactor is offline, as it is right now, engineers make upgrades that will help them achieve their goal of making fusion a viable energy source--a long-standing mission that will likely continue for decades.

No Cheers In Carbon Market As Kyoto Protocol Heads For Second Birthday

Paris (AFP) Feb 14, 2007 - Two years ago on Friday, the Kyoto Protocol for cutting greenhouse gases was born after an agonising gestation, but there will be few birthday celebrations in the carbon market created by the UN pact. As US states mull setting up their own market to trade in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, they are casting a worried eye on the almighty crash in the European Union's Emissions Trading System (ETS), the first and so far only significant market in carbon.
