The Energy Daily Editorial Team produces Energy Daily's coverage of the global energy industry. We report on oil and gas, power grids and utilities, energy markets and policy, and the renewables and storage reshaping how the world is powered. Articles reflect our team's collective editorial process, source verification, drafting, technical review, and editing, rather than a single writer's work. Planning And Guidelines Are Lacking As Use Of Wind Energy In US Grows

Washington DC (SPX) May 04, 2007 - Although the use of wind energy to generate electricity is increasing rapidly in the United States, government guidance to help communities and developers evaluate and plan proposed wind-energy projects is lacking, says a new congressionally mandated report from the National Research Council. To inform the development of guidelines, the report offers an analysis of the environmental benefits and drawbacks of wind energy, along with an evaluation guide to aid decision-making about projects.

Scientists Seek Ways To Bury Greenhouse Gases

Bangkok (AFP) May 03, 2007 - Scientists believe that finding a way to bury the world's greenhouse gas problem -- quite literally -- could be an important step to curbing climate change, but the technology is still in its infancy. The technology would capture carbon dioxide released by power plants or other factories, transport it and bury it underground -- either in old oil fields or coal mines, or even at the bottom of the ocean.

Ultrashort Light Pulse Blazes New Paths For Science And Industry

Baltimore MD (SPX) May 02, 2007 - Researchers in Italy have created an ultrashort light pulse - a single isolated burst of extreme-ultraviolet light that lasts for only 130 attoseconds (billionths of a billionth of a second). Their achievement currently represents the shortest artificial light pulse that has been reported in a refereed journal. Shining this ultrashort light pulse on atoms and molecules can reveal new details of their inner workings-providing benefits to fundamental science as well as potential industrial applications such as better controlling chemical reactions.

Oddball Schemes To Fix Global Warming Get Panned

Paris (AFP) Apr 30, 2007 - Unconventional schemes for tackling global warming by installing a giant sunshade in orbit, sowing the seas with iron and scattering sulphur into the upper atmosphere are set to be bluntly rejected by UN experts this week. The oddball initiatives are being fostered by geo-engineers -- scientists who say headway to reduce the fossil-fuel pollution which drives global warming is so ludicrously slow that bold new ideas are needed to avert climate catastrophe.
