OPEC Promises Expensive Oil

Moscow (RIA Novosti) Nov 19, 2007 - On November 17-18, Saudi Arabia will play host to the third summit in the 47 long-year history of the omnipotent oil cartel - the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). On the eve of the summit, OPEC has been subjected to a massive attack led by oil consumers, who demand that it should immediately increase oil production. The price of oil may surpass the record of $100 per barrel any day, but it is already clear that the oil cartel is not going to make any concessions to oil buyers this weekend.

Russia, EU Still Divided On Trans-Siberian Overflight Charges

Moscow (RIA Novosti) Nov 19, 2007 - The Russia-EU aviation summit, slated for November 16-17 in Moscow, has been postponed for an indefinite time because of Moscow's reluctance to sign an agreement on trans-Siberian overflights. On November 8, the Russian Transport Ministry said the summit had been called off indefinitely. According to both Russian and European media, the European Commission, which had co-organized the summit, wants to punish Moscow for its intractability.

Russia Will Supply A Third Of European Gas

Moscow (RIA Novosti) Nov 19, 2007 - At the 20th World Energy Congress in Rome on November 11-15, Russian representatives confirmed that they have chosen Europe as a priority market of energy supplies for many years ahead. Gazprom, for instance, intends to increase its share in the European gas market from the current 26% to 33% by 2015. It seems that Russia is not particularly worried about the EU initiative to protect its domestic energy market, which was made public in October.

CGD Ranks CO2 Emissions From Power Plants Worldwide

Washington DC (SPX) Nov 16, 2007 - Now for the first time, the CO2 emissions of 50,000 power plants worldwide, the globe's most concentrated source of greenhouse gases, have been compiled into a massive new data base, called CARMA-Carbon Monitoring for Action. The on-line database, compiled by the Center for Global Development (CGD), an independent policy and research organization that focuses on how the actions of the rich world shape the lives of poor people in developing countries, lays out exactly where the CO2 emitters are and how much of the greenhouse gas they are casting into the atmosphere.

Baker Institute Study Shows Big Five Oil Companies Limit Exploration

Houston TX (SPX) Nov 14, 2007 - A study released today by Rice University's Baker Institute for Public Policy finds that the Big Five international oil companies (IOCs) are spending less money on oil exploration in real terms despite a four-fold increase in operating cash flow since the early 1990s. On the flip side, the study, The International Oil Companies, finds that second-tier oil companies are spending more in exploration, positioning themselves to be in better shape when it comes to future oil reserves.
