The Energy Daily Editorial Team produces Energy Daily's coverage of the global energy industry. We report on oil and gas, power grids and utilities, energy markets and policy, and the renewables and storage reshaping how the world is powered. Articles reflect our team's collective editorial process, source verification, drafting, technical review, and editing, rather than a single writer's work. Report Released On Credit Risks Of China’s Oil And Gas Industry

Shanghai, China (SPX) Sep 29, 2008 - The credit rating department of Xinhua Finance Limited (XFL, TSE Mothers: 9399 and OTC: XHFNY), China's premier financial information provider, released its report on Future Credit Trends in China's Oil and Natural Gas Industry, which identifies, in addition to macro-economic policy to support stable growth and control inflation, government policy on issues such as refined oil pricing mechanisms and energy security as the primary factor influencing the oil and gas industry's credit worthiness. Xinhua Finance feels that a) realization of a market oriented pricing mechanism via the linking of domestic and international refined oil prices remains a long term goal of the Chinese government; b) reform of the domestic market's refined oil pricing mechanism is unavoidable; and c) to the extent that inflationary pressures can be brought under control, the government should allow pricing of domestic refined oil to reflect the market.

South Bend Pilot Project Uses Smart Meters To Cut Energy Costs

Atlanta GA (SPX) Sep 29, 2008 - GE Energy and American Electric Power's (AEP) Indiana Michigan Power subsidiary today announced the deployment of 10,000 GE Energy smart meters in a pilot project in South Bend, Ind., that will begin January 1, 2009. The pilot program will help consumers track their electricity consumption and empower them to control their energy costs. AEP also will deploy a variety of GE Energy smart grid products and technology solutions that will help it improve productivity and power reliability, increase energy efficiency, more quickly restore power after an outage and reduce the need for new power plants.

Study Of Smart Energy Homes

Dublin, Ireland (SPX) Sep 29, 2008 - The term smart energy refers to the approach of using the most cost effective long term products to satisfy home residents' needs of energy. Cost and resource effective usage may come from purchasing new products that were originally manufactured to achieve energy savings, and/or employing effective methods for using existing products that were not originally designed to support smart energy goals. Improving energy efficiency in homes is an important first step in the growing trend of green remodeling since the existing energy is generally produced from non-clean and/or renewable resources such as burning of fossil fuels at power plants, which contributes to smog, acid rain, and global warming.

Government Renewable Energy Mandates Would Lead To Unsustainable Harvests

Boston MA (SPX) Sep 24, 2008 - A new study -- The Emerging Biomass Industry: Impact on Woodfiber Markets -- published by RISI, the leading information provider for the global forest products industry, found that federal and state mandates, if fully implemented, would lead to over-harvesting of forests in the United States and are therefore unrealistic. This new study examines the proliferation of woody biomass projects throughout North America and what rapid growth in this industry would mean to the pre-existing markets that depend on a steady and reasonably priced source of woodfiber. The study forecasts how new and existing biomass projects affect the supply, demand and prices for wood fiber from all sectors of the forest products industry, and provides a review of current and future uses of woodfiber for energy generation and liquid biofuel production. In addition the study provides a forecast of demand for wood pellets and biomass chips from Europe and Japan, and analyzes regional development of the wood energy business in the United States. Rocky Goodnow, study co-author and Senior Timber Economist with RISI, commented, Bioenergy projects will certainly boost the demand for woodfiber, but we don't see that demand reaching the levels implied by current policy goals. He continued, While there is clearly a lot of interest in wood-based bioenergy right now, growth for this new industry will be constrained by sustainable harvest levels as well as woodfiber prices.
