Ten people were killed Thursday when a landslide triggered by heavy rain swept away three houses in a mountainous village in northwest Nepal, police said.

The accident happened in Yarsa village in Rasuwa district, said local police officer Amrit Khadka, adding that five members of one family were among the dead.

Chief district officer Hari Prasad Mainali said rescue efforts were hampered by difficult mountain terrain and continuous rainfall.

Nepal is prone to landslides and floods during the summer rainy season.
