A man consumed by jealousy is suspected of murdering eight members of his wife's family before committing suicide in China, state press said Wednesday.
Wang Changyi is believed to have murdered his brother-in-law and his wife and their four children, as well as his sister-in-law and her mother early Tuesday, the Chuncheng Evening News reported.
Following the killings, Wang committed suicide by ingesting poison, it said.
Police said the crime scene at Bailujiao village in Yunnan province was "full of blood" but refused to say how the murders had been carried out, according to the paper.
Among the children killed the oldest was 17 and the youngest was five, it said.
According to the paper, Wang was incensed that his wife had run away and had earlier threatened her family if they did not reveal her whereabouts.
He had also earlier killed the family pig, dog and cat with poison as he demanded to know where his wife was, it said.
The wife, identified as Luo Jingchen, had once run away with another man after she discovered that her husband had had an extra-marital affair of his own, it said.
The victims all lived in the same courtyard home.
Wang is said to have married into the family in 1989 and his son was in school.
"From now onwards, how am I going to live," the paper quoted a sobbing Luo Yongchang, the 73-year-old patriarch of the family, as saying.
