Three Lebanese army soldiers were killed Wednesday in an Israeli bombardment on a large military base near the southern port city of Sidon, police and army sources said.

Israeli warplanes fired missiles on the Sarba position, east of Sidon, they said.

"Israeli warplanes staged mock raids before firing on the soldiers who had been ducking in fortified trenches surrounding the position," an army officer said.

The deaths brought to 24 the number of army soldiers killed since Israel launched a massive offensive on Lebanon after the Shiite militant group Hezbollah captured two Israeli soldiers at the borders on July 12 to secure a prisoners' swap.
