A Russian MiG-29 fighter jet crashed Thursday while taking off from an airfield in the western province of Perm, Russia's air force said.

The jet's two pilots managed to catapult to safety and were in satisfactory condition following the incident at the Bolshoe Savino airfield, said air force spokesman Alexander Dobryshevsky, quoted by the ITAR-TASS news agency.

The cause of the crash may have been a bird flying into the plane's engine, he said.
