Torrential rains caused by Typhoon Kaemi have washed away a military barracks in eastern China, killing six people and leaving 38 others missing, state press reported Thursday.
The disaster prompted an urgent order by Chinese President Hu Jintao for "prompt and all out efforts" to find the missing, who include soldiers, officers and their families, Xinhua news agency reported.
The incident in Jiangxi province occurred Wednesday morning after Typhoon Kaemi hit Fujian province to the south on Tuesday night.
The typhoon was downgraded to a tropical storm after making landfall but continued to dump heavy rains across China's southeast and central provinces, with the bad weather expected to continue for the rest of the week.
The death toll from Kaemi in China stood at 11, including seven in Jiangsu province, the Xinhua news agency said late Wednesday.
It was not immediately clear whether those killed in the military barracks flood were included in Wednesday's death toll from Xinhua.
The region is still reeling from Tropical Storm Bilis, which hit southeastern China on July 14, resulting in nearly 10 days of torrential rains that took the lives of more than 600 people.
