China's southeastern province of Fujian, a major victim of deadly Tropical Storm Bilis, is bracing for more devastation with Typhoon Kaemi expected to hit mid-week, state media said Monday.

The typhoon is estimated to hit Fujian or neighboring Zhejiang province late Tuesday or early Wednesday, Xinhua news agency quoted the Fujian observatory as saying.

The observatory has warned of rainstorms and winds of up to 72 kilometers (45 miles) per hour across Fujian province, Xinhua said.

All vessels have been ordered to return to harbor by 8:00 pm Monday and local authorities have been advised to monitor the safety of people living in makeshift shelters at coal mines and in mountainous areas, the agency said.

Local governments have also been ordered to boost patrols along reservoirs and dams in preparation for flooding.

At 0800 GMT Monday, Kaemi was centred about 260 kilometres east-southeast of Gaoxiong in southern Taiwan, the Hong Kong Observatory said.

Forecasters said it would move northwest or west-northwest at about 20 kilometres per hour towards Taiwan.

At least 43 people died and more than three million others were affected in Fujian province after Tropical Storm Bilis struck mainland China on July 14, according to the latest official figures.

Bilis has killed at least 530 people and left over 130 missing in China.

Kaemi will be the fifth typhoon in the area this year, Xinhua said.
