AU Optronics Corp expects its shipments of thin-film-transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panels and sales to register a large increase in 2006, company president H.B. Chen said.

"Numbers will be quite high" in the second half of the year, he said at a news conference to mark the company's 10th anniversary.

When asked to elaborate, Chen said shipments and sales are set to increase further in the coming months, especially after AU's acquisition of Quanta Display Inc in October.

Chen declined to be more specific, saying the company will not be making any financial forecasts for this year.

In the first seven months of the year, AU's sales increased to 147.26 billion Taiwan dollars (4.48 billion US) from 102.51 billion a year earlier. Sales for 2005 amounted to 217.39 billion.

At a July 25 investor conference, AU said it expects its third-quarter shipments of large-size LCD panels to increase about 12 percent sequentially, after an 8.1 percent increase in the second quarter.

Large-size panels refer to those measuring 10 inches or more diagonally.

Shipments of medium to small-size panels are seen rising 15 percent in the third quarter, after a 14.3 percent increase previously.

The blended average selling price for TV panels in the third quarter is expected to fall 5.0 percent from the second quarter, it said.
