A 74-year-old man became the 12th victim of the heatwave sweeping much of Spain after he died in hospital at Castellon near Valencia in the southeast of the country after several days in a coma, Spanish media reported Saturday.
The man had been unconscious since being taken to hospital on July 25 and died of multi-organ failure brought on by severe heat exposure, the Europa Press news agency reported.
A 77-year-old woman had died Thursday from severe dehydration in Barcelona, the Catalan regional government said.
In an attempt to advise some four million people thought to be at risk of heat exhaustion the Spanish government recently unveiled a prevention plan.
Nine people succumbed to heat-related illnesses last year and 26 in 2004.
