Eight Palestinians were wounded on Tuesday in Israeli air strikes on three houses in the Gaza Strip suspected of holding rockets, Palestinian medical sources and the Israeli military said.

Also on Tuesday, a 29-year-old Palestinian died of wounds sustained last week during an Israeli ground operation in the Maghazi refugee camp in the Gaza Strip on July 20.

One house in eastern Gaza City was reduced to rubble by one rocket which caused four injuries. In the southern Gaza town of Rafah, two houses sustained massive damage in the air raid where four other people were wounded.

An Israeli army spokesman confirmed aircraft carried out raids against two houses in Gaza City and Rafah used by the radical Islamic Jihad movement, which has fired thousands of rockets into Israel in recent years.

One house used by the armed wing of the ruling Hamas party was also targeted in Gaza City, he told AFP.

"We warned the civilians in the area of the impending strikes through leaflets and we also made warning phone calls to the residents around the area," he said.

According to an AFP count, 114 Palestinians and one Israeli soldier have been killed in fighting in the Gaza Strip since Israel launched a massive operation there following the abduction of a soldier by Palestinians on June 28.

His death brings tp 5,258 the total number of people killed since the start of the Palestinian intifada in October 2000, the vast majority of them Palestinians.
