Vexcel Corporation, in cooperation with RADARSAT International (RSI), has been awarded a contract to generate digital elevation models and orthorectified image maps of North and South Korea.
Vexcel will process the standard RADARSAT products acquired from RSI, to create the maps. These topographic and image maps will be among the few ever produced of North and South Korea, and will be the most complete and recent coverage available.
The Korean peninsula, in particular North Korea, has historically been deficient of accurate maps. These new products will be well suited for terrain visualization, telecommunications planning, intelligence, and exploration applications.
Vexcel and RSI have jointly advanced this state-of-the-art technology for delivering digital elevation models and image maps of large areas, at a low cost.
Maps created from RADARSAT data benefit from radar's inherent advantages resulting in rapid production cycles and completeness of coverage, since data can be acquired day or night, regardless of clouds or weather conditions.
Vexcel recently mapped the entire 700 kilometer Pacific coastline of Colombia using similar RADARSAT data. Vexcel's archive of RADARSAT DEMs and ortho-image mosaics include areas of Colombia, Korea, Peru, Japan, China, Taiwan, Irian Jaya, Canada, French Guiana, and Venezuela. Most digital elevation models are available off-the-shelf from Vexcel for $1.25 per square kilometer.
