US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spoke with China's foreign minister Yang Jiechi to discuss the crisis following North Korea's bombardment of a South Korean island, her office said Friday.
"Secretary Clinton talked with Chinese foreign minister Yang today and encouraged Beijing to make clear that North Korea's behavior is unacceptable," State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley told reporters.
Earlier Friday, China's foreign ministry reported the phone talks between Clinton and Yang.
They came as the United States and South Korea prepare joint naval exercises in the Yellow Sea on Sunday, a show of force against Beijing's ally North Korea, which China has already criticised.
Yang had urged Seoul and Pyongyang to exercise calm and restraint and solve problems through dialogue, a ministry statement said, according to the official Xinhua news agency.
