The Turkish military confirmed it conducted a "small-scale" incursion into northern Iraq Tuesday and dealt a "heavy blow" to a group of Kurdish rebels seeking to infiltrate Turkey.

"A small-scale operation conducted by ground troops as part of hot pursuit… dealt a heavy blow," the general staff said in a statement on its website.

The troops penetrated "several kilometres" into northern Iraq, it said.

The statement did not mention how many troops took part in the incursion which began overnight.
