Space Systems/Loral (SS/L), a subsidiary of Loral Space and Communications and the world's leading provider of high-power commercial satellites, today announced that it was selected to provide a new direct broadcast satellite (DBS), EchoStar XVI, to a subsidiary of EchoStar Corporation.

EchoStar XVI is the seventh satellite contract awarded to SS/L in 2009. It is planned for launch in 2012.

The space-proven SS/L 1300 satellite bus, used by EchoStar XVI, provides the flexibility for a broad range of applications. SS/L currently has 59 satellites on orbit and has amassed more than 1,600 years of reliable on-orbit service.

Space Systems/Loral Selected to Provide Nimiq 6 Satellite for Telesat Fleet

Space Systems/Loral (SS/L), a subsidiary of Loral Space and Communications and the leading provider of commercial satellites, today announced that it has been selected to provide a satellite for Telesat, one of the world's leading satellite operators. The new satellite, Nimiq 6, which is fully leased to Bell TV, will provide Direct-to-Home television service in Canada.

"In 2009, both Telstar 11N and Nimiq 5 were launched and successfully put into service," said Dan Goldberg, president and chief executive officer of Telesat. "Following the success of working with Space Systems/Loral on these two programs, we were pleased that they were able to provide the best combination of technology, cost and schedule among several competing manufacturers for the Nimiq 6 contract."

Nimiq 6 is an all Ku-band satellite with 32 high power transponders. It will be located at 91 degrees West Longitude, where it will provide HDTV and advanced video services for Bell TV's growing subscriber base. The satellite is based on SS/L's high power 1300 spacecraft bus which provides the flexibility for a broad range of applications. It has a planned mission life of 15 years.
