The official death toll from Moscow's military operation in Georgia was Thursday revised to 66 soldiers, five less than previously announced.
"During the fighting to counter the Georgian army's attack, 66 Russian soldiers were killed," Vladimir Markin from the public prosecutor's office said in a statement.
The previous official death toll, issued September 3 by the Russian army, put the number at 71.
The armed conflict — that began August 7 and lasted for five days — was set off when the Georgian army entered the breakaway pro-Russian region of South Ossetia and sparked a counter-offensive from Moscow.
