A giant Russian nuclear energy firm, Atomenergoprom, may help build a uranium enrichment plant in Japan in a joint venture with Toshiba, the Russian company said in a statement Thursday.

"Atomenergoprom and Toshiba Corporation have agreed to launch detailed studies of potential joint construction of a uranium enrichment plant based on Russian technology on the territory of Japan or another country," it said.

The two companies would "consider establishing the joint venture" to provide nuclear fuel in Japan and other Asian countries, Atomenergoprom said.

Atomenergoprom and Toshiba signed a preliminary agreement in March 2008 on cooperation in civilian nuclear energy.

Toshiba, a multinational industrial group based in Japan, made a first major foray into the nuclear power business in 2006 when it bought Westinghouse, a US-based company that produces nuclear reactors.

State-owned Atomenergoprom was created in 2007 to group together different Russian nuclear energy assets.
