Russia and Europe have agreed to launch a joint space-based antenna project for exploration purposes, a Roscosmos spokesman said Friday.

"The 12-meter deployable antenna is designed to conduct exploration of processes in space and to transmit information to Earth," Igor Panarin said last week at the Farnborough International Airshow.

Panarin said the agreement was a result of negotiations between Roscosmos Director Anatoly Perminov with senior officials from Alcatel Alenia Space, a joint venture of France's Alcatel and Italy's Finmeccanica and a contractor of ESA.

He said the officials had also agreed Alcatel Alenia Space would continue to provide electronics for Russian satellites, including the new Express-AM series of communications satellites.
