The Department of Homeland Security on Thursday said it was too early to say whether fatal shootings at the Fort Hood, Texas military base were motivated by terrorism or not, an offical told AFP.

"We are in the process of obtaining information about the situation at Fort Hood," Homeland Security spokesperson Sara Kuban said, adding that members of the intelligence community were "assessing and gathering the facts."

"Because it is very early in this event we cannot at this time confirm the motive behind the shootings," she added.
