The United Kingdom Ministry of Defence has awarded Thales UK a multi-million pound contract for the provision and operation of ground-based precision landing systems, including maintenance and support until 2015. The comprehensive modernisation programme will increase the safety, reliability, and efficiency of Instrument Landing System service at Royal Air Forces facilities located in UK, Cyprus, and Falklands.

Thales UK will supply, install, and commission 15 ILS 420 (Instrument Landing System), and 15 DME 415 (Distance Measuring Equipment) including an option for eight additional ILS/DME systems.

After commissioning, Thales UK will provide complete facilities/asset management including operational maintenance and support to ensure a guaranteed signal-in-space availability level. The ILS 420/DME 415 replaces the present UK RAF DN-811 ILS supplied by Thales in the 1980's.

Millar Crawford, Managing Director of Thales UK's air systems business said:"Thales UK has supplied similar equipment for the RAF for many years and it's excellent news that this relationship will continue with the most up-to-date technology on the market.

This advanced technology will sustain and improve the ILS service provided to aircraft at various MoD airfields ensuring the highest possible standards of safety and availability. This contract reinforces and builds upon the excellent working relationship that exists between the MoD and Thales."

Thales UK has supplied the UK civilian and military markets with a comprehensive range of ground navigation and landing systems including: 75 ILS, 52 DVOR*, 5 DME and 1 MLS*.

Thales is the only company in the world to offer such a comprehensive and technically advanced product range of ground-based conventional and satellite navigation systems. Thales also provides complete service facilities and asset management for these products.
