In late July, Globecomm entered into a five-year agreement with a major US-based media production and distribution company in the United States valued at $22 million. At IBC 2007 in Amsterdam, the company's president Kenneth Miller discussed the project further, calling it a "major victory that has moved Globecomm into the major league in satellite network operations and broadcasting."
Miller noted that because of legal considerations the name of the media company will not be announced publicly, but that the project will result in a significant investment in Globecomm's company's facilities, including a new playout and uplink center. Globecomm operates an international teleport in eastern Long Island that is a recipient of World Teleport Association's "Teleport of the Year" award.
Miller also noted that the award culminates a well-orchestrated plan that Globecomm has followed for the past few years, as it assembled a team of executives and capabilities that enable it to provide broadcast and network services capabilities for the upper echelon of media production companies worldwide.
Throughout the past five years, Globecomm has invested a significant amount of capital expanding its service line offerings beyond Internet Protocol based voice and data services, to include broadcast video and positioning the Company for the IPTV revolution. Globecomm's video capabilities have expanded to include the turnaround and monitoring of 24 video channels on a global basis and the design and installation of one of the industry's first satellite-based IPTV facilities.
IPTV Contract for SES
Globecomm also took a big step into the world of IPTV recently, when it was named to design and build one of the first, and most substantial, IPTV "super head-end" projects in the world: the IP-Prime project, on behalf of the Americom entity of SES.
Miller reiterated that for the new media customer Globecomm will provide origination, monitoring and uplinking services for the client's world-famous channel portfolio. Globecomm will also design and construct a state-of-the-art network operations center and dedicated uplink facility in Hauppauge, New York (USA). Miller emphasized that this will be utilized to broadcast content to authorized sites. The Company anticipates completion of the facility in March 2007.
Good Year for Globecomm Using "A Little Bit of Satellite"
Over the past 18 months Globecomm has announced a broad range of long-term satellite-based contracts, ranging from the company's involvement in the U.S.Federal Aviation Administration's Telecommunications Infrastructure program through a subcontract with Harris Corporation, to its selection by Raytheon in support of the National Weather Service's Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System.
Its work will impact peace-keeping and security in Europe, through the award of a NATO Force Tracking System. Last month, in New York, the company was recognized by Afghanistan's Ministry of Communications for the work that it has done to build an international video and telecommunications gateway that has enabled Afghanistan to move into the "digital age."
Miller added that this project represented Globecomm's ability to "make a little bit of satellite go a long way" to help people in areas where communications had virtually been impossible.
