Two people were killed in an explosion at a chemical plant in China's northwest province of Gansu belonging to energy giant CNPC on Thursday, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
The incident occurred at a plant operated by the Lanzhou Chemical Company, which is owned by China National Petroleum Corporation, Xinhua reported from the provincial capital Lanzhou, citing local officials.
A nearby residential area was not affected, the officials said.
An investigation was under way to determine the cause of the blast at the factory, located on the Yellow River and the producer of a kind of petroleum resin used in industry.
