The Energy Daily Editorial Team produces Energy Daily's coverage of the global energy industry. We report on oil and gas, power grids and utilities, energy markets and policy, and the renewables and storage reshaping how the world is powered. Articles reflect our team's collective editorial process, source verification, drafting, technical review, and editing, rather than a single writer's work. Japan Proposes Halving Emissions By 2050

Tokyo (AFP) May 24, 2007 - Japan called Thursday for the world to halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, proposing a successor to the Kyoto Protocol it hopes will win over top offenders the United States and China. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, unveiling the proposal ahead of the Group of Eight (G8) summit in Germany, pledged to bring all nations onboard in the fight against global warming by making the post-Kyoto framework non-binding.

Burns Postpones India Visit Indefinitely As Nuke Deal Heads South

New Delhi (ANI) May 23, 2007 - US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns will not be visiting India in 'near future' to help conclude the bilateral 123-Agreement, which would have ratified the 'historical' civil nuclear energy cooperation. Burns, who was expected to reach Delhi this weekend, has 'postponed his visit indefinitely' at the last moment, which has signalled that the bilateral agreement has hit a rough patch.

New Process Generates Hydrogen from Aluminum Alloy To Run Engines And Fuel Cells

West Lafayette, IN (SPX) May 23, 2007 - A Purdue University engineer has developed a method that uses an aluminum alloy to extract hydrogen from water for running fuel cells or internal combustion engines, and the technique could be used to replace gasoline. The method makes it unnecessary to store or transport hydrogen - two major challenges in creating a hydrogen economy, said Jerry Woodall, a distinguished professor of electrical and computer engineering at Purdue who invented the process.

Novel Sugar-To-Hydrogen Technology Promises Transportation Fuel Independence

Blacksburg VA (SPX) May 23, 2007 - The hydrogen economy is not a futuristic concept. The U.S. Department of Energy's 2006 Advance Energy Initiative calls for competitive ethanol from plant sources by 2012 and a good selection of hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicles by 2020. Researchers at Virginia Tech, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), and the University of Georgia propose using polysaccharides, or sugary carbohydrates, from biomass to directly produce low-cost hydrogen for the new hydrogen economy.

Before Selling Carbon Credits Read This

Madison WI (SPX) May 22, 2007 - Storing carbon in agricultural soils presents an immediate option to reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide and slow global warming. Farmers who adopt practices that store carbon in soil may be able to sell the stored carbon to buyers seeking to offset greenhouse gas emissions. Before farmers can sell carbon credits, however, they need to be able to verify that changing soil management has increased the soil organic carbon (SOC) in their fields.

Biofuel From Trees Being Developed At Georgia

Athens GA (SPX) May 22, 2007 - A team of University of Georgia researchers has developed a new biofuel derived from wood chips. Unlike previous fuels derived from wood, the new and still unnamed fuel can be blended with biodiesel and petroleum diesel to power conventional engines. The exciting thing about our method is that it is very easy to do, said Tom Adams, director of the UGA Faculty of Engineering outreach service. We expect to reduce the price of producing fuels from biomass dramatically with this technique.

Live Earth’s Hot Air, Burn Oil Instead

London (AFP) May 19, 2007 - Rock legend Roger Daltrey blasted the forthcoming Live Earth event, saying burning more oil would do more to find solutions to climate change problems, in comments published Saturday. The Who's singer questioned the value of the July 7 concerts and said a better idea would be to burn all the oil to force world leaders into action. The last thing the planet needs is a rock concert, Daltrey told The Sun newspaper.

Biorefineries To Transform Traditional Forestry Sector

Boston MA (SPX) May 18, 2007 - Biorefineries will change the face of traditional forestry industries, an Australian scientist will tell delegates to a major international biotechnology conference - Bio 2007. Dr Simon Potter, a researcher from Ensis - the forestry research joint venture between Australia's CSIRO and New Zealand's Crown Research Institute, Scion - says forestry industries will be transformed by utilising biorefineries to produce a wide range of new, high-value products.

Energy Efficient Desalination Takes A Step Forward

Canberra, Australia (SPX) May 18, 2007 - The delivery of energy efficient desalination received a boost with the establishment of a major new research collaboration between CSIRO and nine of Australia's leading universities. The research aims to dramatically increase efficiency, and reduce the financial and environmental costs of producing desalinated water. The research will help advance water desalination as an alternative water supply option for Australia.
