Putin Says Recent North Pole Mission To Back Russian Claim To Arctic

Moscow (RIA Novosti) Aug 08, 2007 - The results of the Russian North Pole mission last week should be central to the country's case for ownership of a vast section of the Arctic, President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday. Russian researchers made the first-ever dive below the North Pole in two mini-submarines last Thursday, taking rock samples from the seabed to gather proof that Russia's continental shelf stretches out into the Arctic across the Pole.

The captives were among the more than 200 people abducted so far this year by militants and gangs that operate in the oil-rich delta with relative impunity.

Berkeley Lab Offers Ultraclean Combustion Technology For Electricity Generation

Berkeley CA (SPX) Aug 07, 2007 - An experimental gas turbine simulator equipped with an ultralow-emissions combustion technology called LSI has been tested successfully using pure hydrogen as a fuel - a milestone that indicates a potential to help eliminate millions of tons of carbon dioxide and thousands of tons of NOx from power plants each year. The LSI (low-swirl injector) technology, developed by Robert Cheng of the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, recently won a 2007 R and D 100 award from R and D magazine as one of the top 100 new technologies of the year.

Energy Future For Yemen Remains Unclear

Washington (UPI) Aug 07, 2007 - As Yemen reaches out to foreign companies to invest in its oil and natural gas development, the country faces an on-and-off Shiite insurgency, an ongoing al-Qaeda threat and a populace sympathetic to jihadist militants. Yemen already hosts Canadian, Chinese, U.S., Korean and French energy companies, and in April, Yemen's Minister of Oil and Minerals Khaled Bahah made a trip to Calgary, Canada, in an effort to attract more foreign interest in exploring for oil and natural gas in the country before another round of bidding for offshore blocks begins.

Russian Oil-Fuelled Boom Continues

Moscow (SPX) Aug 07, 2007 - Russia's lucky streak continues. The price of oil, the country's main export item and its chief source of budget revenues, has once again soared to record levels. On July 31, the price of a barrel of oil gained $1.38, closing at $78.21 on the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX). This is the highest it has closed on the NYMEX since the exchange began trading oil in 1983 and is close to its all-time record of $78.40 per barrel reached on July 14, 2006.

Time To Withdraw Iraq Oil Law

Washington (UPI) Aug 07, 2007 - Iraq's citizens suffer from the August heat, little electricity and fuel. Death is seemingly around every corner. So the time may not be right for an oil law, especially the one the Bush administration wants. United Press International has found a recurring theme over recent months during coverage of the Iraq oil law: creating a law governing the bloodline to Iraq's economy should be less of a priority than stopping the bloodletting of Iraq's citizens.

Putin Calls For Clear Foreign Investment Rules In Energy Sector

Moscow (RIA Novosti) Aug 06, 2007 - Russia's president called Monday for improvements to rules for foreign investment in the country's oil and gas sector, to ensure clarity and transparency. Russia is currently developing two draft laws to regulate foreign investment in the national economy, one on strategic companies, and one on natural resources. Vladimir Putin told a meeting of Cabinet ministers and representatives of state-controlled oil and gas giants Gazprom and Rosneft, and pipeline monopoly Transneft: We have consistently aimed to establish transparent conditions for foreign investors.

However, a country cannot live only on revenues from non-renewable resources.

Tapping Into Space For Energy

Moscow, Russia (RIA Novosti) Aug 06, 2007 - The main source of energy for humankind is still fossil fuels, or hydrocarbons (oil, gas and coal). Their use, however, has a markedly adverse effect on the environment, not to mention their scarcity. Nuclear power and renewable energy sources (hydro, tidal, geothermal and wind-driven power plants) offer a partial solution. But even they do not address the issue of transport, which uses mostly liquid hydrocarbons. In short, the world has not yet come up with an engineering solution to these energy and environmental problems. Under the circumstances, tapping space for energy may be the best way out.

US Congress Nudges Energy Industry To Go Green

Washington (AFP) Aug 05, 2007 - The US House of Representatives has taken an unprecedented step toward cutting greenhouse gas emissions as it passed a bill requiring utility companies to produce 15 percent of their electricity from wind and solar power. The bill sailed through the House Saturday on a 241-172 vote, despite fervent opposition from big oil and gas companies and the White House, which has threatened to veto the measure. Today, the House propelled America's energy policy into the future, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told reporters. This planet is God's creation; we have a moral responsibility to protect it.

A Future Natural Gas Cartel

Doha, Qatar (UPI) Aug 02, 2007 - The April 9 meeting in Doha, Qatar, of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum attracted intense media scrutiny. Pundits speculated that the hidden agenda of the meeting, the first in two years, was to explore the possibility of developing a natural gas cartel along the lines of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. Such a cartel would have immense financial and political clout in the global economy. Russian President Vladimir Putin first proposed the idea in 2002.
