The Energy Daily Editorial Team produces Energy Daily's coverage of the global energy industry. We report on oil and gas, power grids and utilities, energy markets and policy, and the renewables and storage reshaping how the world is powered. Articles reflect our team's collective editorial process, source verification, drafting, technical review, and editing, rather than a single writer's work. Energy Daily takes editorial responsibility for content under this byline. For more on how we work, see our editorial policy.

NIST Light Source Illuminates Fusion Power Diagnostics

Washington DC (SPX) Oct 15, 2007 - Using a device that can turn a tiny piece of laboratory space into an ion cloud as hot as those found in a nuclear fusion reactor, physicists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) are helping to develop one of the most exotic yardsticks on earth, an instrument to monitor conditions in the plasma of an experimental fusion reactor. Their measurement tool also is used in incandescent light bulbs Cits the element tungsten.

Sol-Gel Inks Produce Complex Shapes With Nanoscale Features

Champaign IL (SPX) Oct 15, 2007 - New sol-gel inks developed by researchers at the University of Illinois can be printed into patterns to produce three-dimensional structures of metal oxides with nanoscale features. The ability to directly pattern functional oxides at the nanoscale opens a new avenue to functional devices. Potential applications include micro-fuel cells, photonic crystals and gas sensors. The researchers describe the new inks in a paper accepted for publication in the journal Advanced Materials, and featured on its Advances in Advance Web site.
