The Energy Daily Editorial Team produces Energy Daily's coverage of the global energy industry. We report on oil and gas, power grids and utilities, energy markets and policy, and the renewables and storage reshaping how the world is powered. Articles reflect our team's collective editorial process, source verification, drafting, technical review, and editing, rather than a single writer's work. Energy Daily takes editorial responsibility for content under this byline. For more on how we work, see our editorial policy.

National Fuel Cell Center Launched With NSF Award

Amherst MA (SPX) Nov 29, 2007 - The University of Massachusetts Amherst will create a new research center focused on the cutting edge of hydrogen fuel cell science, the National Science Foundation (NSF) has announced, awarding a three-year, $1.5 million grant to the Fueling the Future Chemical Bonding Center. The center is one of only three in the nation funded through the NSF's chemistry program that focuses on renewable energy, providing UMass Amherst a prominent role in the effort to reduce the country's dependence on fossil fuels.

Sweet Fuel Supply

Dannoharu, Japan (SPX) Nov 29, 2007 - A new type of fuel cell powered with glucose derived from biomass is described in the latest issue of the Inderscience Publication International Journal of Global Energy Issues. The experimental device works by using sunlight to convert the glucose into hydrogen to power the cell, which produces several hundred millivolts. The use of biological resources, such as food waste and managed high-energy crops, are gradually becoming a viable approach to reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.

2007 Brings The First-Ever Green Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree

New York NY (SPX) Nov 28, 2007 - Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Tishman Speyer Chairman and CEO Jerry I. Speyer and Tishman Speyer Managing Director Tom Madden today announced a number of energy conservation initiatives for Rockefeller Center, including the first-ever green Christmas tree and a new solar energy roof. The solar energy roof, which will be the largest privately owned solar energy generation station in Manhattan, will conserve energy during peak usage times year-round and help power the famous Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree's new energy-efficient LED lights.

Biodiesel Could Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Canberra, Australia (SPX) Nov 28, 2007 - A CSIRO report released confirms that using pure biodiesel or blending biodiesel with standard fuel could reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector. Biodiesel can be manufactured from any product containing fatty acids, such as vegetable oil or animal fats. The report, The greenhouse and air quality emissions of biodiesel blends in Australia assesses the emission levels and environmental impacts of biodiesel produced from sources including used cooking oil, tallow (rendered animal fat), imported palm oil and canola.

Commentary: Osama’s echo chamber

Washington (UPI) Nov 28, 2007 - What do the Archbishop of Canterbury, Patrick J. Buchanan and Osama bin Laden have in common? All three believe America is on a path to national suicide. Bin Laden, of course, is hoping to make it happen. America's existential crisis, says the leader of the Anglican Church, was caused not only by America's actions, but also by a misguided sense of its own mission, and scorned the chosen myth of America, meaning that what happens in America is very much at the heart of God's purpose for humanity. For bin Laden, the destruction of the chosen myth of America is very much at the heart of God's purpose for humanity.

Leeds Researchers Fuelling The Hydrogen Economy

Leeds, UK (SPX) Nov 28, 2007 - Scientists at the University of Leeds are turning low-grade sludge into high-value gas in a process which could make eco-friendly biodiesel even greener and more economical to produce. Biodiesel ¿ motor fuel derived from vegetable oil - is a renewable alternative to rapidly depleting fossil fuels. It is biodegradable and non-toxic, and production is on the up. But for each molecule of biodiesel produced, another of low-value crude glycerol is generated, and its disposal presents a growing economic and environmental problem.

Rising Energy Costs And Efficiency Improvements Will Drive Cleantech Activity

Palm Springs CA (SPX) Nov 28, 2007 - Rising energy costs and efforts to improve energy efficiency will be central drivers of the cleantech industry over the next five years, according to a poll of attendees at Ernst and Young's Strategic Growth Forum. The poll results showed that nearly half of the approximately 140 respondents said rising energy costs are driving corporate interest in cleantech, more than any other factor, including concerns about emissions, recycling and resource scarcity combined.
