Alternative Fuel Demand Boosts Prices Of Forest Products

Charlotte NC (SPX) Jan 08, 2008 - Power companies in the South and Pacific Northwest will drive prices for wood fuels higher as new facilities are built to produce an energy alternative to fossil fuels, experts in the forest products industry said Friday. But the supply of wood chips ¿ a byproduct of lumber production used at pulp mills and power facilities ¿ is dropping as residential construction drastically slows in the weak housing market. The reduced supply has raised prices by almost 10 percent since the third quarter of 2006.

There are mixed reports on Iraq's resumption of oil exports to Turkey, which were shut last week because of full storage tanks, not security impediments. Colombia's state-owned oil company Ecopetrol and the Vancouver-based Petro Rubiales Energy Corp. signed a memorandum of understanding to pipe heavy oil from the Rubiales and Piriri fields in Meta, Colombia. The 217-mile pipeline of India's largest refiner, Indian Oil Corp., will be sending crude from Paradip to Haldia within three to four weeks.

Analysis: China and Turkmen energy

Washington (UPI) Jan 4, 2008 - Before the 1991 Soviet collapse, Russia dominated the economies of the other 14 republics. In the decade and a half since, Western companies have been angling to acquire a piece of the former Soviet Union's energy assets. In the last few years, however, China has become an increasingly important regional player, and in a nasty Christmas present for both Washington and Moscow, on Dec. 28 China National Petroleum Corp.'s subsidiary PetroChina announced it will invest $2.16 billion to underwrite construction of a planned Central Asia-China natural gas pipeline.

Mobile Metal Atoms

Siegen, Germany (SPX) Jan 04, 2008 - Mobile phones, notebook computers, iPods-the boom in portable computing and communications devices is dependent on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries to deliver power. These batteries offer the highest energy density, allow laptops to function for useful amounts of time, and do not display a memory effect when compared to other types of rechargeable batteries. However, modern rechargeable batteries are still not truly satisfactory.
