China says Iraqi oil deal still in negotiation

Beijing, China (UPI) Sep 05, 2008 - Chinese officials say a 20-year oil contract with Baghdad for the al-Ahdab oil field is still under negotiation, opposing claims from Iraqi authorities. The influence of the Iranian government on Baghdad has prompted officials there to discourage Western oil firms from tapping Iraq's substantial reserves, sources say. An international analyst said the Western energy community may wait on the sidelines for Iraq's internal climate to settle before moving on oil contracts.
