Editorial Team

The Energy Daily Editorial Team produces Energy Daily's coverage of the global energy industry. We report on oil and gas, power grids and utilities, energy markets and policy, and the renewables and storage reshaping how the world is powered. Articles reflect our team's collective editorial process, source verification, drafting, technical review, and editing, rather than a single writer's work. Energy Daily takes editorial responsibility for content under this byline. For more on how we work, see our editorial policy.

Analysis: Central Asian biofuel potential

Washington (UPI) Dec 18, 2008 - Of the former Soviet Caucasian and Central Asian republics, those clustered around the shores of the Caspian, particularly Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan, have seen their economies boom because of record-high energy prices. Turkmenistan is waiting in the wings as a rising producer of natural gas, but the story changes as one moves farther east to Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, where geographical isolation and relatively scant hydrocarbon resources have largely precluded them from cashing in on global energy demands. Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are largely dependent for their electrical needs on their Soviet-era hydroelectric infrastructure, but their heightened need for winter energy has led to autumnal and winter water discharges, severely impacting the agriculture of their western downstream neighbors Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.

Metzger from Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg in Germany and Prof. Aloys Huettermann from the University of Goettingen in Germany, it is both a sustainable and economical scenario, contrary to current thinking which suggests it is unrealistic.
