ArmorSource announced it has completed First Article Testing of its new lightweight helmet for the U.S. Army, and will begin deliveries in spring.

The helmet, known as the Lightweight Advanced Combat Helmet, or LW-ACH, is a follow-up to ArmorSource's Advanced Combat Helmet, trimming four ounces from the previous model. According to the company, the lighter weight helmet improves protection and alleviates stress on the head and neck.

"ArmorSource's progressive R&D, engineering and production readiness capabilities are fully engaged to begin supporting the U.S, military with a lighter and more robust combat helmet. And we are very proud to do so," ArmorSource CEO Yoav Kapah said in a statement.

The helmet was developed in cooperation between ArmorSource and the U.S. Department of Defense. The AS-505 model is built to protect soldiers from projectiles, fragmentation threats, and blunt and shock impact.

ArmorSource says the newer, lighter model went through more rigorous testing than its predecessor, where testers found a 10 percent weight reduction can help deliver improved ballistic protection.

"The LW-ACH FAT was challenging," Kapah added. "But the vigorous process assures the Army and the soldiers that the helmet delivers improved and enhanced protection."

The large size LW-ACH weighs three pounds, compared to the 3.3-pound ACH.
