A soldier was seriously injured Tuesday during an attack in Senegal's restive southern Casamance region by suspected seperatist rebels, police said.

"An army position was attacked around 13H00 (GMT) by an armed group believed to be members of the Casamance Movement of Democratic Forces (MFDC)" in the village of Diaboudior, 70km (43 miles) north of Ziguinchor, according to the police source speaking on condition of anonymity.

The soldier was "seriously injured" and transported to a Ziguinchor hospital before being evacuated to Dakar.

On February 15, two soldiers were killed during an attack attributed to rebels in the area outside Ziguinchor, the most important city in the region.

Casamance, which lies south of the rest of Senegal and is separated from it by the Gambia river and country of that name, has been beset by violence between rebels and government forces since 1982.

Violence eased with the signing of an accord between Dakar and the MFDC in 2004, but clashes have broken out again in recent months, leading to both military and civilian deaths.
