Russian arms sales are set to cross a record 8.5 billion dollars (six billion euros) in 2009, with exports at their highest level over the last decade, a senior defence official said Tuesday.

"Based on preliminary estimates, the volume for exports of arms and military technology will top 8.5 billion dollars" in 2009, said Mikhail Dmitriyev, head of the Federal Service for Military and Technical Cooperation.

"This past year will be the tenth year running in which the volume of exports of military goods exceeded the previous year's figures," Dmitriyev was quoted by Russian news agencies as saying.

Russia saw record arms sales in 2008 of 8.35 billion dollars, according to figures released by President Dmitry Medvedev in February.

Russian arms exports in 2007 were over seven billion dollars.
