The space community needs a directory of satellite maneuvering centers that could be contacted in emergencies, scientists at a seminar in France said.
The world's satellite operators also need to agree to "collision avoidance" exercises to increase security in space and reduce concerns about orbital debris, the French Institute of International Relations and the Secure World Foundation, a non-profit group dedicated to the sustainable use of space, said in a release Friday.
A directory of satellite operators would foster better communication between governmental and private space groups to reduce space collisions, the groups said at a recent seminar in Paris.
The United Nations Institute for Disarmament would be a likely agency to be involved in the project, said the groups' report — "Towards Greater Security in Outer Space: Some Recommendations."
