The first official visit by the new head of the UN atomic watchdog, Yukiya Amano, will be to Nigeria next week, the International Atomic Energy Agency announced on Friday.
Amano, who took over as the IAEA's director general on December 1, will be in Abuja from December 13 to 15 "on his first official visit to a member state", the watchdog said in a statement.
"During his trip, Amano plans to highlight cancer care in developing countries and the transfer of nuclear and related technologies for peaceful use."
The 62-year-old Japanese diplomat would meet senior government figures and his programme would also include a meeting with Nigeria's First Lady Hajiya Turai Yar'Adua, founder of the International Cancer Centre Abuja, and a visit to the National Hospital.
Amano is also scheduled to visit the Nuclear Technology Centre at Sheda, about 70 kilometres (45 miles) outside the capital.
