Oceaneering International has been awarded a contract for the conversion of a U.S. Navy nuclear submarine into a moored training ship.
The deal, announced Wednesday by the Department of Defense, is valued at more than $7.25 million under the terms of a cost-plus-fixed-fee contract.
The agreement provides for maintenance, inspections and repairs for the conversion of the USS San Francisco, a Los Angeles-class fast-attack nuclear submarine, into a moored training ship.
Once converted, the San Francisco is slated to be docked at the Navy's Nuclear Power Training Unit in Charleston, S.C., to aid in the training of newly-minted submariners through 2040, according to Naval Today.
The Pentagon said the contract is "necessary for conducting the hull structural survey in accordance with unrestricted operations maintenance requirement card 003" under Navy regulations.
Work on the contract will occur in Portsmouth, Va., and is expected to be completed by August 2019.
The total amount of the contract will be obligated to Oceaneering International at the time of award from Navy Fiscal 2017 shipbuilding and conversion funding.
