Finnish utility group Fortum submitted an application to the government Thursday to build a new nuclear reactor in Finland, the company said.
"Fortum has today … submitted to the government of Finland an application for a decision-in-principle concerning the construction of a new nuclear power plant unit on the island of Haestholmen in Loviisa," the firm said in a statement.
It added it planned to have new reactor running in 2020.
Fortum currently has two nuclear reactors in Loviisa, in southeastern Finland.
Before Fortum two companies, Teollisuuden Voima (TVO) and Fennovoima, submitted applications to build new nuclear reactor in the Nordic country.
The ministry of employment and the economy, responsible for energy matters, has said it will consider all nuclear projects at the same time and would decide on a schedule during the spring.
Last May it said it expected the government to decide on the matter in early 2010.
