Nuclear power operator British Energy said Thursday that it was continuing to hold talks with potential buyers.

The firm had said last month that a series of takeover proposals it had received from unnamed parties had undervalued the company.

"Our dialogue is continuing and a further announcement will be made in due course, however … we will not be able to discuss the process in further detail today," British Energy said in a statement issued ahead of its annual general meeting on Thursday.

French state-owned energy giant EDF is regarded by analysts as the favourite to win a European battle to buy British Energy, which is a third-owned by Britain's Labour government.

German power giant RWE has also been linked with a possible bid for British Energy, while Spain's Iberdrola has ruled out a move.

The British government has a 35.2 percent stake in British Energy, which provides nearly 19 percent of the country's electricity, and owns and operates eight nuclear power stations.
