The Blacksky Corporation has developed a small, reuseable, high performance hybrid propulsion rocket kit called the Optimal 102-H. Originally designed for the US Air Force Aerospace Vehicle Test Course, Edwards AFB, CA, this rocket is designed to provide the scale performance necessary for training Aerospace Vehicle Test Engineers.
The Optimal 102-H kit is ideal for research and educational purposes because is replicates many of the characteristics of "real" sounding rockets and can be completely disassembled and reliably reassembled by students. Capable of altitudes in excess of 7.6km/25K feet, this rocket can provide the practical "hands-on" experience necessary for the next generation of engineers and scientists.
Optimal 102-H Specifications: Diameter – 102mm/4.0inches; Length 147cm/85 inches; Dry Weight (with unfired M-grain) 9.32kg/20.5lbs; Gross Take-off Weight (loaded with Nitrous Oxide) 13.18kg/29.0lbs; Recovery Weight 7.9kg/17.4lbs.
The Optimal 102-H uses a hybrid propulsion technology based on the Cesaroni Technology Hypertek Propulsion system. This system uses an injection molded ABS fuel grain with a molded in place phenolic nozzle.
The oxidizer is liquid nitrous oxide, a gas having physical characteristics nearly identical to liquid carbon dioxide. This type of propulsion system is ideal from a safety standpoint because hazardous operations dealing with the compressed gases are accomplished with remotely operated ground support equipment. Issues surrounding the shipment, storage, and use of solid rocket motors are completely eliminated thus making it a more attractive system for educators.
Blacksky also has all of the necessary flight electronics and ground support equipment for launching this rocket. Additional services such as custom modifications for specific payloads, payload development, arrangements for launch clearances, access to spaceports, etc. are also available from Blacksky.
