Sunnyvale - October 6, 1999 - Trimble introduced today the GeoExplorer 3 data collection and maintenance system, the industry's most rugged and technologically advanced handheld Global Positioning System (GPS) for Geographic Information System (GIS) applications. The system's new design and cable-free real-time mapping capabilities, make the GeoExplorer 3 system the ideal productivity tool for creating and maintaining utility, urban and natural resource databases. The announcement was made at Trimble's Fifth International User Conference. "The GeoExplorer 3 system is the result of our customers feedback for a handheld GPS product that is even more versatile and rugged than the original GeoExplorer receivers," commented Alan Townsend, Trimble's senior director for Mapping and GIS Systems. "The GeoExplorer 3 system offers more features and power for GIS data collection and maintenance than any GPS mapping system in its class," he added. The newly designed GIS data collection and maintenance system gives users the ability to increase productivity through its advanced features in the field or back at the office. The GeoExplorer 3 system is small, lightweight and water-resistant. Its intuitive graphical map and navigation displays allow the user to see their current location, plan activities efficiently and relocate existing features. An integrated digital compass gives accurate bearing and distance to keep the user on track, even while stationary. And with the long-life battery, which lasts an entire working day, there is no need to carry spare batteries. Back in the office, field data collected by the GeoExplorer 3 system can be downloaded to Trimble's GPS Pathfinder Office software for simple processing. The system also includes a support module that provides an instant connection to the office computer and power supply, so there's no need for manual cabling or replacing batteries. With Trimble's Beacon-on-a-Belt, or BoB differential correction receiver, the GeoExplorer 3 system becomes a precise differential GPS (DGPS) tool for real-time mapping and maintenance of GIS data without the need for postprocessing. Users can upload features from the GIS to the GeoExplorer 3 system to relocate, verify and update positions and attributes in the field. This ensures that the GIS contains the most up-to-date and accurate information. Trimble's GeoExplorer 3 mapping system is expected to be available late October through the company's worldwide sales and dealer network.

![]() ![]() The successful launch Thursday of India's heaviest satellite from spaceport of Kourou in French Guyana may have boosted the country's space research efforts to yet another level, but it has also lifted the spirits of at least three Direct-To-Home televisions broadcasters, one of which has been waiting for years to launch its services in India. |
