Swedish Nuclear Power Plant Shut Down For Weeks After Fire
Stockholm (AFP) Nov 14, 2006 A Swedish nuclear reactor was shut down, possibly for weeks, after a transformer at a power plant caught fire, but no one was injured, Sweden's nuclear energy authority and news reports said Tuesday. "A fire in the Ringhals 3 reactor took place near midnight (2300 GMT Monday)," the Swedish Nuclear Power Inspectorate said in a statement on its website. "The reactor was shut down on an emergency basis, and all security systems worked as they should have." The cause of the fire was unknown, said an inspectorate spokesman, who pointed out that the transformer was located in a separate building located some 50 to 60 meters (yards) from the reactor. Ringhals 3 is located in southwestern Sweden. The reactor was expected to be stopped for at least two weeks, according to Swedish news agency TT. Sweden has 10 nuclear reactors, accounting for almost half of the country's electricity production.

Nuclear Waste Nears Storage Dump In Germany Amid Protests
Berlin (AFP) Nov 13, 2006A shipment of 175 tonnes of highly radioactive nuclear waste neared its destination in northern Germany on Sunday despite being forced to interrupt its two-day journey from France several times. Police lined the tracks as the train carrying the 12 containers of re-processed waste rolled slowly into the town of Dannenberg at about 3:30 pm (1430 GMT). |
