Northwest Solar Expo April 18-20 In Oregon
Portland OR (SPX) Apr 02, 2008 The US Northwest is becoming a hotbed of solar energy development as home and business owners discover the huge potential for this limitless source of clean energy. The Northwest Solar Expo April 18 - 20, 2008, Oregon Convention Center, Portland, is a great place to go to learn more. Whether you are a homeowner interested in doing more to combat global warming, or a business owner looking to manage your energy consumption and costs, the Northwest Solar Expo has information to help you make your next move to clean, renewable energy from the sun. "Solar energy is real and Oregon is a leading the way with this renewable domestic source of clean energy. The products are mature, the economics are right and incentives are in place." said Joseph Reinhart, executive director, Oregon Solar Energy Industries Association (OSEIA). "Solar energy solutions are available today that fit virtually every budget. From residential electric and hot water systems to utility scale projects, this Expo has it all." "Reflecting the double-digit growth of solar nationwide, the Northwest Solar Expo has grown to be one of the best regional solar events in the country," said Rhone Resch, president of the Solar Energy Industry Association. "I look forward to witnessing the event first-hand and celebrating the success of the expo and solar energy in Oregon at a crtical time; currently the U.S. Congress is considering extending important renewable tax incentives to help spur more solar energy development. We expect the Senate to take up the House-passed bill (H.R. 5351) in late April". "This event has something for everyone," said Reinhart. "Consumers, commercial building owners and developers and solar professionals can experience a range of mainstream clean energy solutions, from photovoltaic (PV) solar electric systems, solar hot water systems, passive solar design, pool heating, and specialty solutions and energy efficiency options." The three-day Expo features workshops and classes taught by local solar experts. The Expo will kick-off with a luncheon address on Friday, April 18 by Rhone Resch, Executive Director of the national Solar Energy Industry Association and comments from Michael Grainey, the director of the Oregon Dept. of Energy and Bob Beisner of SolarWorld. Businesses and professionals interested in learning more about the dynamic solar market should consider attending the Friday luncheon and panel discussions. The Saturday and Sunday events include workshops ranging from solar basics to more advanced topics for consumers and commercial. Both days will also have fun events for children. "Interest in solar energy is growing for both homeowners and businesses," said Kacia Brockman, Manager of Solar Programs, Energy Trust. "We are seeing standing-roomonly crowds at 'Basics of Going Solar' workshops where we used to see just a dozen attendees." Mike Nealy, president of Global Events Group, which has partnered with OSEIA to put on the Northwest Solar Expo, says, "This event just continues to grow, this year we expect over 50 companies and service providers exhibiting. Expo sponsors include:Oregon Department of Energy, Energy Trust of Oregon, Inc., SolarWorld, NECA/IBEW, Comcast, groSolar, Portland General Electric, City of Portland Office of Sustainability, SolarCity, and SPG Solar. More than 4,000 people from throughout the northwest attended the second annual Northwest Solar Expo in 2007. "Attendance increased fifty percent from the inaugural event in 2006 and we expect further strong attendance growth in 2008 as solar interest awareness grows with peoples concerns for the environment and energy efficiency." said Nealy. In Oregon, residential, commercial and industrial customers of Portland General Electric, Pacific Power and NW Natural may be eligible to receive cash incentives for the installation of solar electric and solar water heating systems, as well as for energy efficiency measures. For more information, visit www.energytrust.org, or call 1-866-368-7878. Businesses may also be eligible for Oregon state energy tax credits equal to fifty percent of eligible project costs through the Oregon Department of Energy. "The 2007 increase in the Business Energy Tax Credit (BETC) enacted by the Oregon Legislature is expected to result in a four-fold increase in business investment in integrating solar into their energy mix," said Reinhart. "We expect to see more and more businesses generating a portion their energy from solar in the future. This in turn is creating demand for solar energy manufactured equipment made in Oregon."
