New radar algorithm enhances resolution without replacing hardware

The research team led by Sangdong Kim and Bongseok Kim from the Automotive Technology Division of DGIST (President Kunwoo Lee) has introduced a radar signal-processing technology that significantly improves resolution without modifying existing radar hardware. This approach provides precise object recognition without expanding bandwidth, making it a cost-effective and less complex solution.

Current radar systems used in automotive and aerospace industries rely on bandwidth expansion or high-complexity algorithms to enhance resolution, which often leads to increased costs and system intricacy. The DGIST team has innovatively addressed this challenge by utilizing additional information embedded in the envelope of radar signals. Through the development of a novel algorithm that analyzes the contour features of received signals, the researchers have achieved nearly double the resolution of conventional radars using the same hardware.

The advancement not only improves object recognition but also enables precise identification of objects both inside and outside vehicles, broadening its potential applications.

Dr. Bongseok Kim, a key researcher in the project, stated, "I am delighted that our work has been published in the IEEE Sensors Journal, one of the most prestigious journals in the fields of sensors and signal processing. We will continue to enhance this technology through follow-up research to enable its practical application in autonomous vehicles and industrial environments."

This project was supported by DGIST's general project (D-PIC 4.0) and the National Research Foundation of Korea's Basic Research Support Program. The research findings, authored by Dr. Bongseok Kim and corresponding author Dr. Sangdong Kim, were published in the December issue of the IEEE Sensors Journal.
