New Jersey ends gasoline rationing
by Staff Writers
New York (AFP) Nov 13, 2012

Rationing ended Tuesday for New Jersey drivers seeking to buy gasoline, as shortages caused by superstorm Sandy finally receded.

Governor Chris Christie imposed restrictions in 12 counties to try to reduce long lines at gas stations. Cars with odd-numbered license plates were allowed to fill up on odd dates and those with even-numbered plates on even dates.

Christie said Monday that the system "was successful over the past 10 days, creating order and easing customer lines at our gas stations and helping reduce additional anxiety."

New York City and Long Island are still using the rationing system.

Sandy, which hit New Jersey and New York at hurricane strength on October 29, knocked out power to filling stations, damaged fuel supply infrastructure, and severely disrupted shipments of gasoline.
