France's Areva wins Brazil power line contract

Paris (AFP) Dec 17, 2009
French nuclear energy giant Areva said Thursday it has won a contract to build the world's longest high voltage electricity line across Brazil for 400 million dollars (275 million euros).

The transmission link will stretch 2,375 kilometres (1,500 miles) from the Madeira hydroelectric complex in the northwest of the country to the energy-hungry metropolis of Sao Paulo in the southeast, Areva said.

The line is expected to be operational in April 2013, it added.

Brazil suffered a massive blackout across half the country last month that officials blamed on a short-circuit during bad weather that disconnected three high-tension lines carrying energy from the Itaipu hydro power plant.
