The European Union on Tuesday said that it had sent power generators to Ireland after Storm Eowyn cut electricity to hundreds of thousands of people.

Ireland recorded its strongest-ever wind gusts on Friday as the storm barrelled in from the Atlantic, cutting power, grounding flights and shutting schools.

Brussels said that 13 generators had been delivered from Poland and four would soon arrive in Ireland from Denmark following a request for help from Dublin.

"Extreme weather events, like storm Eowyn, increasingly put Europe's disaster resilience to the test," EU crisis response commissioner Hadja Lahbib said.

"But they also demonstrate the growing strength of our joint preparedness and solidarity efforts."

Irish state electricity firm ESB on Monday said that power remained out for 204,000 customers, and that approximately 100,000 customers should have supplies restored during the week.

DeepSeek breakthrough raises AI energy questions
Bangkok (AFP) Jan 28, 2025

That has significant implications not only for the cost of developing AI, but also the energy for the data centres that are the ... read more
