Chinese President Hu inserts ideology in charter

The constitution of China's ruling Communist Party was amended on Sunday to include President Hu Jintao's new economic and development vision for the country, an official said.

The roughly 2,200 delegates to the party's five-yearly Congress endorsed Hu's concept of a "scientific outlook on development" to go into the charter, an official speaking at a closing ceremony for the event said.

"Scientific development" is a catchphrase that looks to place more emphasis on addressing the environment and China's army of poor as the nation develops, rather than a sole focus on breakneck economic growth.

The move to include Hu's ideology in the constitution is widely seen as a sign that the president has consolidated his power after succeeding Jiang Zemin five years ago.

Hu is regarded as certain to be named party chief for another five years when the most senior leadership posts are decided at Monday's first meeting of the new Central Committee.

The Central Committee is a top body of roughly 200 cadres that was elected on the final day of the Congress.

China's Communist Party on Sunday endorsed Hu Jintao's new economic model for the country, while opening the way for a top leadership reshuffle that will likely see the president consolidate his power.
