China To Host High-Level Energy Meet In October
Beijing (AFP) Sep 20, 2006 China will host a gathering in October of five major energy-consuming nations on ways to deal with high oil prices, Chinese and South Korean officials said Wednesday. The meeting, which will bring together senior officials from China, the United States, Japan, India and South Korea, may result in a call for stable energy prices, they said. "It's preliminarily set in Beijing for some time during the last 10 days of October, but the accurate date is not fixed so far," said an official with the National Development and Reform Commission, who asked not to be named. In South Korea, an official with the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy said the proposal for the meeting came from China. "The nations have yet to work out details such as the date, but China plans to host it in late October," said Toh Kyung-Hwan, a director at the ministry's energy department. "At the meeting, the countries may adopt a declaration calling for stable energy prices," he said. Energy security is becoming an urgent priority for fast-growing China, already the world's second-largest consumer of oil. China imported 95.8 million tonnes of crude oil in the first eight months of the year, up 15.3 percent from the same period last year as its booming economy boosted demand.

Troubled Shell-Led Sakhalin Project To Go Ahead Moscow (AFP) Sep 20, 2006 Russian authorities stressed Wednesday that work on the vast Sakhalin-2 oil and gas fields should continue, in an apparent softening of Moscow's stance after criticism from Japan and Europe. "I don't see any reason to stop work on the project before the end of the technical economic assessment," Russia's Deputy Economy Minister Kirill Androsov was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies. |
