China Southern orders 55 planes from Boeing

China Southern Airlines has ordered 55 "next-generation" 737 jets from US aviation giant Boeing, the companies announced Thursday.

The order from China's largest airline would be worth 3.8 billion dollars at list prices, but large orders are often discounted.

The 55 planes, the smallest models in Boeing's civilian airline fleet, will supplement the 129 737s operated by China Southern as well as 14 more 737s yet to be delivered from previous orders.

Collectively, the airplanes will progressively lower the average age of the China Southern Airlines fleet -- already one of the youngest in China.

"We look forward to placing our new 737s into our expanding network," said China Southern Airlines president Si Xian Min. "This order is based on our great experience with the 737, which is highly reliable, highly efficient and preferred by our customers."
